Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the right to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
