Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
