British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.
British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
